My lady friends Golfie slipped her timing belt last week. Sad golfie.
So: two things on the horizon, a new motor and a new motor. One for golfie so that he can be sold on to a new loving home. Obviously my gf also needs a motor to putz to and from work.
So: I got 10k max to spend on a car (will sell the old car for 3-4K) in the Bay Area. I’m tempted by a newer fox/golf, and have been considering a Volvo. Main requirements / preferences are:
4 door
Manual
25+ mpg
Has a bit of personality
Decent reliability
The rules are flexible depending on how many other preferences are met.
Ideas plz :)

How about a plastidipped IS300. If you could talk him down and get that shit off the paint it could be a fun car for a while. It’s close enough to me to make me want to go see it.

Volvos are not reliable. Think Japanese.

Maybe an Impreza?
Or a Kia Soul?

Junkyard engine, your mechanic installs it. New motor mounts, and main seals if required.

New Golf, with the 1.8t you can get easily 40 mpg on the highway,
